@harc: There are gyroscopes for arduino. However, they are unfortunately $70, and the accelerometer is about the same price. A “bricked” phone is only $10-$20 on ebay, and already has both, plus a camera, memory, a processor, wifi, 3G (with a SIM card), and GPS. It’s actually cheaper to go the Android route, if you can get one cheaply and fix it, than it is to go the full arduino route. And the weight ends up being about the same.
